History of Billings Logan International Airport

In 1912, Billings, Montana started its history of flights by a local dentist, Dr. Frank Bell, with his homemade private jet, the Curtiss 0-X-5.

On its Memorial Day weekend in 1913, the airport also recorded its first flight when Dr. Frank Bell took off from Billings to Park City and vice versa with 40 miles.

The first flight was captured by a local artist, J.K. Ralston, through his painting entitled "First Flight," displayed inside the Billings Logan International Airport.

In 1927, Billings City raised and approved a funding of $5,000 for establishing 162 hectares of the landing strip on top of the rimrocks overlooking the Yellowstone valley and the downtown area.

A 1,820 feet runway and a 192 square feet administrative building were built with the help of horse-drawn equipment.

The Billings Municipal Airport officially opened on May 29, 1928, and Dick Logan was the first airport manager until 1957. After Logan died in 1957, the airport was renamed Billings Logan Field in his memory of service in the early years of the airstrip.

In 1971, the airport was again renamed to its present name Billings Logan International Airport.

Billings Airport has been a great help for the City and the whole region of Montana. Air service entered the Billings market through Northwest Airlines in 1933 and Inland Airlines in 1934.

The city constructed a new terminal building and a new road north of 27th Street to downtown Billings.

Major Terminal expansions began in 1958, 1972, and 1992 to accommodate the flying demand of the inbound and outbound passengers in the area.

In 1935, the first field lights were installed.

In 2005, a new tower was built.
